The name derives from the ancient church of San Michele in Orto, which stood in this area before the construction of the current building.

During the fourteenth century the loggia was transformed into an elegant stone building.

Thanks to the growing popular devotion towards an image of the Madonna kept inside, Orsanmichele progressively took on a religious function, becoming a church much frequented by the faithful.
